Covered Gutter Protection System Vs. Other Gutter Systems

Covered Gutter Protection System vs. Other Gutter Systems

Considering the extended number of gutter protection systems available, it is no surprise that choosing the right one for your home can prove to be a cumbersome and lengthy task. In order to help busy home owners make the right decision, we have set out to compare the various systems that can help protect your home from weather related damages.

In order to establish a standard by which we can measure the various gutter protection systems up against, we have compared the various systems relative to the system that is considered the best on the market.

Fully covered gutter systems provide superior protection from debris, and allow maximum water slow into the system, which helps avoid overflows that can lead to improper drainage around your home.

Many companies offer covered gutter systems, but be aware- not all covered gutters are created equal! A few important items to look for with covered gutters are:

Is the cover nailed to the roof’s shingles, or is it tucked under the drip edge to the roof? If it is nailed to the roof’s shingles, it can actually void the manufacturer’s warranty on your roof, and can cause roof leaks down the line.

Is the gutter cover perforated or solid? Perforations allow a slight slow-down in water flow, giving the water and the gutter cover an opportunity to “bond”, thus directing the full flow of water into the gutter trough.

And if aesthetics are important to you, do the gutters allow for a separate top and bottom color? If not, the gutters will be highly visible on your roof. If the system allows you to choose a separate gutter top color, you can match the top to your roof, and the trough to your trim or siding, providing a seamless look.

Below are some other systems on the market to compare. As with any major purchase for your home, take the time to learn about each system and then decide what’s right for you.

Mesh or Screen Gutter Covers
These metal coverings fit inside against the back of the gutter and across the top acting like a strainer and filter. This design is easy to install and less expensive than the solid types. However, while they reduce the frequency and difficulty of ongoing gutter cleaning, they do not eliminate it. Unsightly debris together with snow and ice can collect on top of the screen and cause it to collapse. Over time, there is also a chance for the screens to rust and stain face of gutter.

Gutter Filters
Sponge-like foam "space fillers" that let water drain through but keep leaves from building up in the bottom of the trough. These fillers do not have the capacity to handle heavy rain and water flow, and may cause overflow during heavy rain. Snow and ice can also settle into the foam, harboring the potential for ice damming, sagging and overflowing.

Solid Gutter Covers
Made of vinyl or aluminum, these solid gutter covers snap onto the top front of the gutter and slip under your shingles, altering roofline and appearance. They are nailed to your roof which pierces shingles, roof felt and decking, possibly voiding roof warranty or causing leaks. Gutter covers may also blow off in high wind conditions and due to the lack of support, they are very vulnerable to damage from weight of debris, snow, or ice.

Solid Gutter Covers with Slots
Most of the solid cover gutter guards rely on the principle of "water adhesion". The water enters the gutter through slots or small holes located underneath a lip or on the vertical side. These gutters do not keep out all small twigs, dirt, asphalt roofing granules, and pine needles. They perform less well in very heavy rain falls or on steep roofs and may not be considered visually appealing.

Gutter Brushes
Most, but not all, leaves and large debris will pass over gutter brushes. Small items that get caught near the top of the gutter brush either blow away or decompose over time. However, over time, the dirt, small twigs and pine needles that do not pass through the gutter brush may create a layer of 'gunk' in the bottom of the gutter which may cause staining and require periodic gutter cleaning.

How To Know When To Call In Professional Home Repair Specialists

Author: Adele Bantle

Weekend home improvement warriors beware! There are some projects you should never, ever try to tackle on your own. While you may be willing to give just about any home repair project a shot, if you get involved in projects that are just way over your head, you may make an even bigger mess of things. Worse yet, you may put your home and your family in danger by dabbling in serious repair jobs. If you need to call an electrical contractor for electrical services, it does not make you any less of an expert homeowner. Part of being a great homeowner is to know when to call in the pros. Aside from a situation where you are dealing with wiring or electricity, there are other times when a professional will be able to complete your repair efficiently and safely without creating a bigger problem.

Plumbing issues are sometimes simple, but when they get complicated, you are better off calling a plumber. Since plumbing is such a necessity in a home, it is important you not be without it for too long. If you try to fix issues yourself and it leads to serious problems, you may find you and your family living in a hotel room for a few days while the pros fix the problem. Instead of trying something that may not work, contact a professional right away. It can save you a great deal of money and headaches, not to mention enable you to stay in your home during the repairs.

If your home has a roofing problem or needs to be replaced altogether, leave the job to the pros. This is especially true if your roof is especially steep or pitched. Professionals have the proper tools that enable them to move carefully on your roof, regardless of how dangerous it may be. However, if you try to accomplish the work on your own, you run the risk of slipping, falling and possibly injuring yourself seriously. Some roof repairs are really simple, but the nature of their location makes them a job for the pros.

Should you determine your home has a pest problem, you will need to have a professional exterminator eliminate the problem. If you just see a bug here or there, it is probably not a sign of anything serious. However, if you notice symptoms of an infestation, do not try to tackle the problem on your own. If you think you have the issue conquered and it turns out you do not, there can be serious damage done in the time it takes to finally call the pros.

A final concern for homeowners who typically like to handle chores and projects on their own is chemical or asbestos problems. If you realize there is a problem in your home with dangerous chemicals, mold or asbestos exposure, you need to have a professional remedy the issue. Trying to tackle it on your own can be a mess and very dangerous, sometimes creating a worse problem than had you just left the problem alone. One last note, be sure to install carbon monoxide detectors in your home to alert you to the dangerous, odorless gas.

Dishwashers: First Time Installation

Author: Terro White

Whether you are replacing a model or installing a dishwasher for the first time, there are numerous factors to think about, especially when you consider installing a new dishwasher. Self-installation is difficult and time-consuming process, depending on your level of experience; it may not work for everyone. Know your limitations and options, before you make a decision.

First time installation

First time installation of an undercounter dishwasher involves electrical skills, considerable plumbing, precise measurement, and cut-out of counter space. If you do not have significant installation and carpentry experience, you must seek professional help for a first-time installation of your dishwasher.

To install a dishwasher, you need to know the overall undercounter dimensions space and cabinet opening dimensions too. There are many manufacturers who provide specific dimensions for cut-out requirements. You will also need hot water line with sufficient water pressure as well as temperature specifications. Electrical volts are specified. A separate circuit and circuit breaker is also recommended.

Some dishwashers come with features like rear wheels for easy installation process. This reduces scratching of linoleum floors when heavy appliances move across the floor or eliminates heavy lifting.

Replacing a dishwasher

Before you purchase any kind of dishwasher, make sure to look carefully at the dimensions to find a model that will easily fit in your designated space. You may get a detailed dimension guide from the manufacturer. Also, compare different dishwasher reviews to verify the existing features, location, and type of connections on both old and new models. In addition, verify if the wires, drain, and water lines are correctly positioned for the new unit or not. These requirements are specified in installation manual. Typically, the only problematic change is a difference in the water line if you are changing a model.

You can replace most models with little experience and relative ease. It typically takes more time than do-it-yourself. On an average, a dishwasher approximately takes three hours for installation. Moreover, the dishwasher manufacturers may recommend someone in your area to take care of it for you.

What Does Professional Dishwasher Installation Include?

*    Fully licensed and insured installation.
*    Inspection for any existing defects, damage, or code violations.
*    Inspection of different facilities before starting.

Which Electricity Supplier Should I Choose?

Author: Paul Buchanan

If you've just made your first house purchase, you're probably incredibly excited about the prospect of moving in. However, you're also probably feeling a little burnt out on the wallet side of things - after all, houses aren't exactly cheap, and the thought of a looming mortgage over the next 20 years isn't the sort of thing that makes you want to jump out of bed smiling in the morning.

So why not start saving money as smartly as you can right from the beginning? By doing what it takes to start your new life in your new home with the best foundation possible, it's a wise move to put the work in now to find the most cost-effective way of doing things - meaning you can reap the rewards later. There's nothing worse than finding out that you've spent years paying too much for something that you could be getting far cheaper, such as your gas and electricity supplies, which is why it's such a good idea to start off on the right foot and choose the cheapest deal right from the beginning.

Naturally, prices change over time and it could turn out that, in two years or even less, your electricity deal isn't as cheap in comparison to the rest as it once was. That's fine - what's most important is securing the cheapest deal today. So how do you know which energy supplier is the right one for you?

This is where the internet comes in. One of the best things about the internet is its ability to help you hunt down the best deals on electricity and gas prices in an instant, and you can even open up several windows at a time to allow you to compare each package side by side. Like what you see from one supplier? All you need to do is open up a new tab or browser window, go to a competitor's site, and you can compare the prices in seconds. If you like your comparisons to be even simpler, you can use a comparison search engine that will lay everything out for you on a single page so you can see which electricity supplier is the one that will work best for you - for the time being, at least.

Once you're in your new place with your cheap electricity and gas, make a note to check prices periodically so you can keep getting better and better deals. While the savings might not pay off your looming mortgage bills, at least they won't take away from them - leaving your more extra cash to enjoy your life in your gorgeous new home.

Saving Money On Your Expenses By Utilizing Electricity Comparison

Author: Tim Wolfenden

Most people are aware of the importance of comparison shopping and how they can take advantage of unique opportunities in order to save a lot of money and benefit from the highest quality resources. While most individuals will like to identify themselves as smart when it comes to the investments made into every purchase they make, one area that a large number of individuals are not taking advantage of is found with saving money on utilities. This specifically relates to the opportunities that exist with electricity comparison.

When people utilize electricity through their business or home they most often work with the utility company that was providing this service before they invest into their business location or home. Each and every month all these individuals pay this relatively unknown firm whenever rates they demand with little to no argument. While some people are capable of taking advantage of a resource which provides affordable rates, others are blindly paying ridiculous sums of money to take benefit of the simple utilization of electricity.

Rather than continuing the blind spending habit of paying electrical uses any rate they want, pursue the opportunities which are created while you compare electricity resources. This is a chance which very few people realize they have available to them and this ignorance proves highly beneficial to electrical companies. While you are able to compare various rates for different electricity companies you could recognize a resource that'll provide you with high quality electricity at the lowest possible price.

In the business environment this could prove highly effective while you are trying to save money such that you can improve your profit results. Through the utilization of electricity comparison you could identify a specific resource which will save you money on utilities and impact your overall business expenses. This will reduce the amount of cash you take away from your revenue and allow you to increase your profit margin with the opportunities of smart spending.

In the home environment the utilization of the opportunity to compare electricity even offers a significant number of benefits. More homeowners are looking to take advantage of unique opportunities that will allow them to reduce their expenses so they could save cash in case of emergency. Following the recent economic decline more individuals are paying a significant amount of attention when it comes to saving money and avoiding unnecessary spending.

Whether you are looking to take advantage of opportunities which will allow you to save money through your business or save money at home, the resources of electricity comparison will prove highly beneficial. Turn to the online environment in order to discover a high quality resource that will help you in this great comparison and identify the best electrical opportunity for you to take benefit.

Compare Salt Water Softeners and Salt-free Water Softeners Before You Buy

Author: ClearwaterSystems

If your water contains high concentrations of calcium, magnesium and other "hard" minerals, you can be sure it's leaving rigid, crusty deposits called scale on the inside of your pipes and appliances. If left untreated, this scale will eventually:

  • Clog your pipes and reduce water pressure
  • Reduce the life of your dishwasher, hot water tank and washing machine

In addition, hard water decreases cleaning efficiency because it lessens soap lather, forms scum, and leaves noticeable rings in bathtubs, showers, and sinks. It also requires the use of additional cleaning agents and chemical water softening products.

Salt Water Softeners

Water treatment specifically for "softer," water has existed for more than 100 years. The first water softener, unveiled in 1903, introduced the concept of ion exchange, which involves replacing hard-water minerals with sodium ions. Still widely used today, ion exchange or salt water softeners operate by binding negatively charged sodium, potassium or hydrogen resin to positively charged metal ions, drawing the hard minerals out of the water. Salt water softeners still remain the most affordable means to treat all the water in your home.

To continue optimal performance, salt water systems require regular regeneration with brine (salt). The frequency of regeneration largely depends on how many people use the water in your home and how hard your water is. Regeneration can be conveniently scheduled by meter, timer, and manual start.

Salt-free Water Softeners or Descalers

Over the years, other water treatment options have been developed, including a number of so called salt-free systems. These systems sound appealing because they claim to:

  • Eliminate the need for salt
  • Save you money
  • Minimize concerns you may have about the sodium levels in your water

Electromagnetic and catalytic water softeners are two common types of salt-free systems, with catalytic being the more recent design. However, neither one actually removes hard-water minerals from your water. The catalytic type, in theory, uses a process known as epitaxial crystallization to change calcium from a form that deposits scale (calcite) to a form that does not (aragonite). With electronic or magnetic systems, water's calcium and magnesium ions are purportedly altered by passing through a magnetic field. Manufacturers of these types of water treatment systems offer anecdotal evidence of their effectiveness; however, traditional water tests cannot support their claims.

Stephen Lower, Ph.D., a retired professor of physical chemistry from Canada's Simon Fraser University, notes that neither magnetic nor catalytic salt-free systems have been proven to work scientifically.

"There is a fairly extensive scientific literature on [epitaxial crystallization], mostly relating to self-assembling structures that have nothing to do with water treatment. With regard to water treatment, theory and practice seem to widely depart; I am not aware of any reports in the reputable literature that this scheme has been shown to be effective in preventing scale formation."

Lower further explains that catalytic systems only work when water is supersaturated in calcium or magnesium, reducing the mineral content to simply the saturation level. They cannot prevent scale deposits on surfaces at higher temperatures or eliminate scum and evaporation rings.

Importance of Water Testing

In order to make an informed decision about which type of system is best for your home, it's important to get your water tested to determine its hardness – or levels of calcium, magnesium and other substances. Clearwater Systems offers a free water analysis. This information will help you determine the most efficient and reasonable way to protect your pipes and appliances from scale formation and provide all the benefits of soft water.

Paper Cups vs Ceramic Mugs

Author: Disposables

Ceramic Cups vs Paper Cups

Many coffee chains in the UK and US are now offering discounts if customers take ceramic coffee cups instead of using the stores own paper cups.

Most are lauded for their commitment to "going green" but is there any proof that these changes will have the desired effect and minimise our negative effect on the earth?

Research from the early 1990s suggests that each time you clean a ceramic cup in the dishwasher, it takes about as much energy - and would probably produce as many emissions - as it takes simply to produce a new paper cup!

Gains in dishwasher efficiency since then may have changed the math a little, but if you wash your ceramic cup after every use, you could easily be talking hundreds of cups of coffee before your mug makes more sense than a daily dose of paper. Cleaning the mug by hand may not absolve you, either - although you can help your case by using cold water and be sparse with the washing up liquid - detergents are pretty energy-intensive to make.

The argument is worse when you compare Ceramic Cups with Plastic Glasses

Using china would be an ethical no brainer were it not for Work carried out by Dr Martin Hocking, Reusable and Disposable Cups: an Energy-Based Evaluation. He concluded you'd need to use your ceramic mug 1,006 times for it to break even (in energy terms) with its polystyrene competitor. This is largely because kilns are extraordinarily energy intensive, because using a dishwasher to wash the cup also uses energy, and because mugs get broken. Plastic cups also had a reasonably good recycling infrastructure in place: the UK's Save a Cup programme saveacup.co.uk still collects millions of plastic glasses from vending machines.

It seems whether an individual or massive coffee house you cannot win sometimes, whatever we do we seem to leave waste, create more waste, or anger some groups with our actions. Who really considers all of the above when all you actually want is a Mocha Frappuccino, and quick?

Make Your Dishwasher Clean Perfectly

Author: Musa Aykac

Dishwashers are in most households now; they are very convenient to have, due to the fact that they clean at great ease, and also help in alleviating the household workload. But for businesses, commercial dishwashers are a must, there is no way people can wash all of the dishes with there hands.

Often I hear queries regarding facts such as, why is my dishwasher not cleaning as well anymore? Well we will look to cover and answer some of the most common aspects as to why this occurs and things that you can do to see a vast improvement.

Primarily a lot of people reduce the temperature of there dishwashers to around 80 Fahrenheit, although this may be more energy efficient, unless you have an eco friendly dishwasher, it will not do the performed task as well. The minimum a dishwasher should run at is around 120F and to effectively clean and remove bacteria the dishwasher should be changed to 155F. With persistently keeping your dishwasher at low temperatures, you may be damaging the machine, as it will extend its cycle time as it tries to effectively heat the water.

Another aspect that a lot of people are not doing is using the correct type and brand of detergent. As the credit crunch looms, people turn to cheaper alternatives of brands, this is good for some markets, but you must make sure that you are always using the correct detergent, although it may be a bit pricier it is surely worth it to have clean dishes. There is the option of selecting to use either gel or crystal based detergent, both of these work in the same way, so once you have found one that does the job for you, you should stick to that brand.

Finally an aspect that a lot of people tend to forget is to load there dishwasher properly, it's a bit like a washing machine. If you overload the machine with clothes, they will probably still come out dirty; the same can be said for a dishwashers. If they are piled up with dishes they will still come out dirty no matter what temperature you have it on.

Taking all of the above aspects into consideration, you should perform each task effectively to get maximum performance from your machine. If you are still experience difficulties, then you should promptly call out an engineer to fix the problem.
